Partial transcript of Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-West Virginia) remarks on the Senate Democrats’ “Better Deal” economic agenda. The press briefing was held on Aug. 2, 2017:

Let me say very quickly that anyone that believes that free trade is fair trade, come to West Virginia and see what’s happened to our manufacturing jobs, whether it’d be in the coal industry, steel industry, or whether it’s in the chemical industry. Whatever it may be, we lost. We lost big time.

And now to have countries with their manipulation, if you will, and also on top of that, I’m very concerned about us not even having any minerals in our country that we even mine any more, that we do anything basically to protect the national interests of our country and for the security of our country.

These are things we’re fighting for. I want to bring them to the forefront.

It’s far too long when you’re letting different corporations from different countries that basically are working towards our financial markets, buying our financial markets, I think is detrimental to the security of our nation and the well-being of this nation.

So we’re going to fight hard. West Virginia is taking a hit. But we’re fighting back. We’re not giving. And we need not only free trade but most importantly fair trade, and that’s what we’re going to have with these deals.

So we’re going to work hard…
